Matera

The Sassi — ancient cave dwellings carved into a ravine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Matera at a glance

Matera is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on earth. Its Sassi — two districts of cave dwellings and rock churches carved into a limestone gorge — were abandoned as a 'national shame' in the 1950s and have since been reborn as a UNESCO site, a cave-hotel destination, and a film set (No Time to Die, The Passion of the Christ). It's compact, walkable, and unforgettable at golden hour.
