Lecce

The 'Florence of the South' — extravagant Baroque carved from golden Lecce stone.

Lecce at a glance

Lecce is the Baroque capital of the south, an old town built almost entirely from soft, honey-coloured Lecce stone that local craftsmen carved into some of Italy's most theatrical facades — above all the Basilica di Santa Croce. Beneath the streets sits a Roman amphitheatre; beyond the walls lies the Salento, with its two coastlines and some of Puglia's best beaches. It makes the ideal base for the heel of Italy.
